“Transferring her gaze from the keyboard to the computer screen, the optimistic writer held out hope that the letters would somehow jump onto the blank white space and form themselves into well-crafted sentences”.
Does this sound like you at times?
Writer’s block usually happens when I’m tired or have too much on my mind but sometimes it happens for reasons unknown and here are a few suggestions picked up along the way that I've found to be helpful.
- Take a nap.
- Step outside for fresh air and to clear your mind.
- Get moving. Take a walk, run on the treadmill, do some jumping jacks – just get the blood flowing.
- Try to pinpoint why you are stuck. Do you need to get your story from one point to another and aren’t sure how to get there? Has your plot gone off track?
- Move on to another area of your story, switch to research or step away from the whole thing altogether for a little while.
Today, I think that's just what I'll do.
