When it came time to start marketing my book, I knew this was my weak point. “I’ve never been comfortable trying to sell something and now I have to try and sell myself,” I shuddered.
“Don’t worry about trying to sell your book, just focus on building relationships. The sales will come once they get to know you.” This simple advice came from a close friend and very successful network marketer. It lifted a weight of anxiety from my shoulders. I’m a friendly person. I can do that easy enough, I thought.
A few places to network include:
- Social events
- Online networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn)
- Clubs (reading group, sports, quilters – whatever your interest)
- Respond to a writer’s forum
You need to be willing to put in the time to develop relationships and build trust. Once this is established, you have to stay connected in order to cultivate this new friendship. Don’t burn any bridges – you never know what connections they may have led you too.
Make being friendly an everyday part of your life.
