I'm On The Move!

Just came in from this morning’s Aquafit class and figured I’d get my thoughts out about exercise before heading outside to enjoy the sunshine on my day off.  Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and, if I want to see weight loss and muscle building results, I knew I’d have to kick it up a notch.  However, I needed to find the right work out because if I’m not enjoying it, I won’t stick with it.
Right off, I knew going to a public gym for fitness class was out.  I used to do that when I was fit and confident but now I hate my body image so certainly don’t want to be bouncing around in front of others.  I have visions of the days when it seemed no matter what I wore, at some point in my workout, I ended up getting a gym wedgie and how do you discretely deal with that?

No worries, though.  I’ve come up with a list of exercises I enjoy and can easily fit into my lifestyle.

Hiking/Walking:  Hiking has always been a favourite pastime for my family and there are numerous nature trails around here but I don’t go alone because of our amazing wildlife population (bears, cougars, wolves) so if there is nobody to go with then it might just mean walking to work or doing laps on the high school track.

Swimming/Aquafit I enjoy working out in the water so swimming lengths and or taking in an aquatic exercise class is a fun and refreshing way for me to get moving.

Home Gym:  Living on the west coast, we don’t get much for snow, but see a fair bit of rain in the winter so I’ve set up a section in my home with an elliptical, exercise ball, yoga mat, and dumbbells.  But, you don’t need a special room to create an exercise space and you don’t need a bunch of costly equipment.  There’s a plethora of websites with excellent, simple floor exercises and yoga stretches that work every part of your body.

Crank up the tunes and get moving.  I've no excuses now!  I'm gonna' kick this weight loss thing in the .... :)

I’m a month into my new fitness plan and feeling pretty darn good. I already knew a lot about healthy eating coming into this, but knowing and doing are two different things when it comes to giving up some of those comfort foods you grew up with.

In order to lose the weight, I decided to go with a highly rated nutritional system I’ve heard about over the years. I did a lot of research, checked out various websites, sampled products, and even got to speak to some of the nutritionists and doctors behind the products. Yeah….I’m serious about getting rid of this weight and replacing it with energy, muscle, and a new wardrobe.

One of the first things I did was go through the cupboards and get rid of the salty snacks, frozen pizza, ice cream, and my beloved seasoned pumpkin seeds which had become my evening addiction. I left the cookie jar alone because, as my husband warned, that could be cause for divorce.  No worries, we'll just have to take time to make healthier home-made options for him.

Now, throughout the day, I have 2 very yummy shakes (French Vanilla in the morning and Orange Cream, Chocolate or Strawberry later - sometimes I add extra fruit) I also eat a healthy balanced meal of lean protein, complex carbs, healthy fats, and fiber.  Luckily I love my veggies!  I can also have light snacks and, hallelujah, they even have scrumptious chocolate treats. Oh, if I could only work bacon in there.

Water is my favourite drink, so that’s good because I need to drink a truck load of it each day! So much that I slosh when I walk and had to move my office desk closer to the bathroom.  Speaking of water, wish me luck, I’m about to squeeze into my bathing suit and head to the public swimming pool!

Transform Your Body.  Transform Your Life.

Just finished a great week in Las Vegas with some friends at a health and wellness event.  I’m turning 55 soon and looking to make a change in my life.  Like many of you, I have gained a lot of weight over the years, have a busy life but low energy and motivation level.  I’ve started a few writing projects but can’t seem to move forward. More seriously, I went through a period of emotional stress with the loss of three siblings in four years and supporting someone very dear to me with major depression.  However, there is a positive twist to my sharing this personal information as I’ve taken hold of the reins of my life and am steering down a new trail.

I’ve committed to a 16-week Challenge with a plan to transform my body, mind, energy level, and overall health.  I will update with before and after photos at the end of the challenge, and will continue to sign up for these 16-week challenges until I have reached my goal of releasing 100 lbs!  So today, I choose to express myself by using this blog to share my journey of taking charge and hopefully encourage and help some of you along the way.
